Introduction to startup
Digester startup involves introducing the microbial community (or inoculation) from an existing effective digester. Inoculation of the digester is probably the most important event because this enables a higher biogas output and biogas yield per ton of feedstock. There are several means to start-up or introducing methanogens to the digester. One that is commonly used on livestock farms involves the use of cattle slurry. Rumen manure has the appropriate micro-organisms that can digest cellulose material effectively, as well as methane producers.
There are 6 biochemical and further physical factors that make a significant contribution to a healthy environment for the methanogens which are the more sensitive organisms in the fermentation. We have investigated several types of inoculum and identified the best means of startup.
